My Route

During the first week, I meandered south through New Mexico to Guadalupe and Carlsbad National Parks. My route was:

DateDayNight
14thDrove from Breckenridge, CO, south on I25 to Ratón, NMCamped at Sugarite State Park
15thVisited and hiked Capulin Volcano National MonumentCamped at Conchas Lake State park
16thA frustrating day. Drove to Santa Rosa and attempted (unsuccessfully) to find the "Site of Coronado's Bridge" near Puerto de Luan which was mentioned in Places to Go in New Mexico and on the "Historical Marker" signs. Next stop was Ft. Sumner to visit the site of the fort but it was closed on Tuesdays. Blowing off New Mexico, I drove to Guadalupe National Park, TX.Camped in the RV campground because I didn't have a tent (and was classified as an RV) and because the tent campground was full
17thHiked the Tejas Trail to the Bowl Trail. Stopped at the summit of Hunter Peak and saw a herd of mountain goats with some kids (baby goats). Returned via the Bear Canyon Trail where I was rattled at by a rattle snake.RV campground
18thClimbed Guadalupe Peak.RV campground
19thVisited the site of the Pinery Butterfield Stage Station Ruins. Hiked the McKittrick Canyon Trail to Pratt Cabin, the Grotto and Hunter Line Shack. Drove to Carlsbad Caverns, NM, and did the walking tour.Camped on BLM land
20thTook the Kings Palace guided tour at Carlsbad.BLM land

For the second week, I meandered north through New Mexico and Utah to Canyonlands National Park. My route was:

DateDayNight
21stDrove north through Carlsbad and would have stopped at the Living Desert State Park but it was raining. Continued west to Smokey Bear Historical Park, and through the Valley of Fires National Recreational Area.Really cheap motel in Socorro
22ndExplored Kelly ghost town ruins south of Magdalena. Visited the National Radio Astronomy Very Large Array site.Motel in Monticello, Utah
23rdDrove to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park and got a campsite. Hiked the Elephant Canyon Trail. Attended a very lame ranger program.Campground
24thHiked the Lost Canyon Trail. The ranger program was much more interesting: Powell and his expeditions through the Grand Canyon.Campground
25thGot a 4WD backcountry site in Salt Canyon and hiked the Peekaboo Trail back to Lost Canyon.Campsite
26thDrove to Lavender Canyon and hiked to Cleft Arch.Camped on BLM land
27thDrove back to Breckenridge for more skiing.

Stereo Pictures

All the pictures were taken with a Nimslo 3D camera purchased from Reel 3D. This camera takes four half-frame 35mm images per picture. The outer two frames for each picture were then scanned with a no-name slide scanner. I wrote some custom software (1) to scan for the black borders which surround the half-frame on the 35mm image and extract only that image, and (2) to align and crop the left and right image pairs. I then used Gimp and the stereoscopic.scm plugin to create the anaglyphs, and the netpbm tools to stitch together the cross-eyed pictures.
